The Big Lottery Fund and their Awards for All Programme
Funded by The Big Lottery Fund and their Awards for All programme, the Gratitude in Recovery project is a collaborative participatory photography project between Meridian Raw, RISE/EDP and Bristol Drug Project.
We use Participatory photography because it has been used many times to help marginalized communities and the socially excluded by allowing them to create their own photographic projects and portray their own view and stories. The participants are given an unique opportunity to to present their world, as they perceive it and enables them to record and reflect on their own strengths and concerns about the situation they find themselves.
This intense five week photography course is currently being held around the Devon and Somerset areas. In locations: Exeter, Tiverton, Barnstaple, Illfracombe and Bristol.
The main content of the project looks at developing a photo-story or theme, captioning images, creating a portfolio of images and photo-dialogue exercises as well as the learnings of basic camera use, taking pictures and photography skills.
The course is split into two separate modules the first is-Gratitude in Photography, which encourages participants to take pictures and create a portfolio of images that may include objects, people, places, scenes and feelings that they are grateful for.
During the second module, the individual is guided and encouraged to create a photo-story or photographic theme on a specific subject. This could be on community issues, the reflection of a personal journey or any subject they feel passionate about.
For participants it is a great opportunity to learn the full process of a project from the initial idea to the end product. The main stages included are: operating the camera, taking the photos, downloading the images, editing/selection whilst adhering to a specific theme, presentation of images with photo-stories, review and final evaluation.
In conjunction with learning the theory, the course builds on life skills, whilst aiming to improve the health and well being through supporting individuals. Administers a connection for the users to become an active member within their community and the surrounding environment.
